As part of STEAM week, we were delighted to host academic enrichment talk ‘Saving our Insects’ by Professor Dave Goulson.
The 200 strong local community audience were introduced to some amazing images of Professor Goulson’s favourite insects. Insects are in rapid global decline and bumble bees could be completely lost in Britain in the next few decades. The importance of insects was outlined including as the main food source for birds, reptiles and amphibians and the main pollinators on the planet, producing most of our fruit and vegetables. The main causes of insect decline were presented including climate change and light pollution.
Professor Goulson then promoted the use rewilding land, making our gardens more insect-friendly and supporting systems of farming that that are truly sustainable. The key takeaway: “We need to learn to respect nature again”.
